THERE’S still plenty of time to join our summer reading challenge and take part in free creative activities at Leicester libraries.
The challenge – called Marvellous Makers - is easy to join. Simply visit your local library three times between now and 15 September 2024 and borrow and read at least six books to collect rewards. You can also borrow books online from Leicester Libraries’ ebook or eAudiobook collections.
Free fun family ‘crafternoons’ are also coming up at Knighton library on Monday 12 August and at Hamilton library on Tuesday 13 August. Sessions also take place at Belgrave library on Wednesday (14 August) and Westcotes library on Thursday (15 August). Ask at your local library for details.
In addition, naturally creative workshops are coming up with the city council’s Sustainable Schools team, using natural materials and recycling to get creative. Suitable for children aged 6 and 7, there’s a drop-in session at Belgrave library on 14 August from 1-4pm, and bookable workshops at Westcotes library on 15 August – call 0116 454 0390 for details.
And you can enjoy storytelling at the Children’s BookBus on Wednesday morning, 14 August, at Town Hall Square, and at the Get up and Go! Extravaganza event on Victoria Park, 11am-3pm, on 21 August.
Very young children can join in at libraries’ weekly Toddler Time sessions. You can also borrow books from children’s centres. Adults can be a role model by reading six books too - borrow and read six books for a chance to win £30 worth of books.
Cllr Vi Dempster, assistant city mayor for culture, libraries and community centres, said: “The long summer holidays are a great time for families to have fun, but we know that can put pressure on household budgets. We’re very pleased to be providing these free activities throughout the summer as part of the reading challenge, in all our 16 local libraries - so that wherever you live in the city, you’re never far away from something free to do over the holidays.”
The 2024 summer reading challenge is produced by The Reading Agency and delivered in partnership with libraries and Create, a leading charity igniting change through creativity.
