A POP-UP shop at the Highcross shopping centre will give people the chance to find out more about adult learning and sample some of the courses on offer.

The shop, on the upper mall, will be open from 1pm-6pm on Tuesday 9 and Wednesday 10 September, and will be holding free drop-in sessions on topics including arts, history, languages and literature.

There will also be digital learning sessions, collage and pebble art, and a family learning session which will be an introduction to learning through nature.

The shop will be hosted by Leicester Adult Education, which runs a wide range of courses for adult learners. Courses are now available for people who want to start learning for the new academic year.

Robert Stevens, curriculum manager for arts, languages and wellbeing, said: “We offer a wide range of courses for adults, whether you want to get creative, learn a new skill, or add to your CV. There are courses available for every level of learning.

“Some of our most popular programmes include English for speakers of other languages; courses that help you learn basic maths and digital skills; and creative classes in art, languages and wellbeing.

“We also offer family learning, skills for work and tailored support for people with learning difficulties and disabilities.

“Funding is available for some people and courses, and we work hard to provide high-quality, affordable learning that is accessible for everyone. Our pop-up shop staff will be able to advise on funding and finance options.”

The taster sessions on offer will include an introduction to digital learning, where participants can learn how to download and use health apps, safely scan QR codes, and how to keep safe online. Friendly tutors will give advice to anyone interested in learning Italian, French, Spanish, Latin or Gujarati; and art tutors will lead fun, beginner-friendly sessions where you can make a yarn bird, embroidered bookmark or decorative keyring.

Assistant city mayor for communities, adult learning, jobs and skills, Cllr Mustafa Malik, said: “Every year, around 4,500 people learn with Leicester Adult Education, so we know that our courses are really popular and valued by the local community.

“Adult learning can transform lives, which is why we want as many people as possible to benefit from it and to know about all the opportunities that are available to them. This pop-up shop is a great way to showcase our adult learning offer in Leicester.”
