Items from the Cabinet of Curiosity

DINOSAUR fossils, mammoth teeth and a taxidermy Cayman crocodile are some of the curious items that will be on display at St Philip’s church hall this month.

Leicester City Council is taking its Doorstep Museum to Evington on Saturday 18 October to mark the start of the half-term break, with plenty of free activities for families to enjoy.

Visitors will be able to handle a selection of real museum objects from the Cabinet of Curiosity, learning about the origins of some of the fascinating items in Leicester’s collections, and have a go at arts and crafts inspired by a range of cultures, including collage, textile art, rangoli and geometric art.

Artists from Leicester Islamic Arts & Heritage will lead the drop-in activities.

Local people who know the area will also be able to help shape a new exhibition that will celebrate the shops and stories of Evington Road and the village’s Main Street when it opens at Leicester Museum & Art Gallery in March 2026.

The third in a series of exhibitions focussing on Leicester’s distinct neighbourhoods, ‘Popping to the Shops: Evington’ will feature the characters and businesses – both past and present – that help make Evington unique.

Visitors to the Doorstep Museum will be able to hear directly from the exhibition’s co-producers as they chat with residents and staff from St Philip’s Centre about Evington Road’s rich history.

The Doorstep Museum will be at St Philip’s church hall, Evington Road, Leicester LE2 1HN on Saturday 18 October from 11am-4pm.

Everyone is welcome to the free event, which is supported using public funding by Arts Council England.
