SMOKERS in Leicester are being encouraged to Step Right Out as part of a campaign to ensure others don’t breathe in second-hand smoke.
Step Right Out asks people to pledge to maintain a smoke-free home and car, to help protect their family and friends from the harmful effects of breathing in cigarette smoke.
Rob Howard, Leicester’s director of public health, said: “This campaign is about more than just quitting smoking – it’s about protecting the health of everyone in our community, especially children and vulnerable adults, from the dangers of second-hand smoke.
“We urge all Leicester residents to join us in committing to smoke-free homes and cars. Together, we can take meaningful steps towards a healthier city for generations to come.”
Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable illness and premature death, affecting approximately 56,000 smokers living in Leicester.
People who pledge to join Step Right Out will receive free advice and tips delivered to your home or via email. There’s also a monthly e-newsletter with the latest updates, advice, and news on smoke-free living.
Assistant city mayor for public health, Cllr Vi Dempster, said: “This initiative is a vital step towards our vision of creating a smoke-free city by 2030.
“Over winter when the weather is cold, many of us meet indoors and welcome friends and family into our homes - but we must remember how important it is to protect the people we care about. Second-hand smoke doesn’t just disappear, it lingers in the air and on surfaces, posing real risks to children, older relatives, and those with health conditions. By simply stepping outside to smoke, we can make our homes safer, cleaner, and healthier for everyone."
