A £1 million programme of repairs and resurfacing is due to take place on roads across Leicester this summer.

The city council is carrying out a programme of resurfacing work which will see repairs carried out to 10 busy neighbourhood roads between now and the end of August.

It will involve some temporary road closures and well signposted local diversions will be in place while the repairs are carried out.

Most of the planned works will take place during the schools’ summer break when there is less traffic on the roads.

Work begins on Wilne Street, in Spinney Hills, on Monday 22 June. The full length of the road will be resurfaced over two days.

Highways teams will then move to King Newton Street, where resurfacing will be carried out on Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 June.

Overnight works are planned for Heron Road at its junction with Kingfisher Avenue, in North Evington, on Friday 26 June.

Resurfacing of part of busy Gwendolen Road, between its junctions with Dorothy Road and Constance Road, will take place over two days from Saturday 11 July.

Morley Road, in the Wycliffe area of the city, will be resurfaced over three days from Monday 13 July.

Resurfacing works will then be carried out to two busy roads in Beaumont Leys.

Butterwick Drive will see its full length resurfaced over 12 days, with work beginning from Monday 20 July.

Works will then move to Leycroft Road from Saturday 1 August, which will be fully resurfaced over 12 days.

The largest scheme of the summer resurfacing programme will take place on part of busy Humberstone Lane, between Barkythorpe Road and the county boundary, for 16 days from Saturday 8 August.

Part of Heacham Drive, in Beaumont Leys, will undergo repairs for two days from Saturday 22 August.

The final resurfacing scheme of the summer programme will take place on Sunningdale Road, off Scudamore Road, from Monday 24 August for up to nine nights.

In total, the planned summer roadworks programme will cost just over £1 million and will see more than 28,500 square metres of road resurfaced.

Martin Fletcher, Leicester City Council director of city highways, said: “This rolling programme of repairs and resurfacing is vital to keep the city’s road network in good condition.

“Unfortunately, the work will mean some road closures and disruption to some drivers.

“We do try to schedule most of these roadworkses during the school holidays when traffic is considerably reduced and will do all that we can to ensure that work is completed quickly and that roads can reopen on time.”

The planned summer roadworks programme is part of the city council’s annual highway capital maintenance programme that will see over £9 million invested in maintaining and improving the city’s highway infrastructure this year.
